6-7-09 PARK RIDGE STRUCTURE FIRE (106 COLONY) 2239 HOURS
(single family 2 1/2 story wood frame dwelling)
At 2237 hours the resident of 102 Colony heard smoke alarms sounding nearby, looked out the window and observed a large amount of flame inside the kitchen window of 106 Colony, the adjacent property to the west. They placed a 911 call and immediately heard the fire sirens sounding. Chief arrived at 2241 hours, established Incident Command near the front of the structure and requested:
A second round for the PRFD confirming a working fire,
Hillsdale FD for a Fast Team,
Montvale FD for an engine ,
ALS and BLS for medical backup/rehab,
PSE+G to turn off gas,
PR Electric to turn off electric,
The Construction Official to examine the structure and restrict occupancy
M and M Contractors to secure the openings (board-up)
The fire was declared under control and overhaul begun at 2307 hours.
All units were clear of the scene at 0046 hours and PR6 (rescue) was sent to River Vale firehouse for air bottle refills
At 0200 hours firehouse cleanup was complete all equipment was back in service and all members dismissed.
A primary and secondary search revealed no occupants. Neighbors later reported that they believed the occupant had left several hours earlier. This was confirmed when the resident arrived reporting a missing pet weasel. A subsequent search found the animal apparently unharmed under the sofa cushion.
A preliminary investigation indicates the fire started in the kitchen dishwasher and spread to the adjacent cabinets, countertop and wall. While the kitchen was a complete loss, damage to the remainder of the house was limited to smoke, water and consequential venting damage. It was a great stop by the initial hose team.
One firefighter was transported to the hospital for treatment of a small hand cut occurring during forcible entry and returned to the scene shortly thereafter.

The Park Ridge Fire Department was dispatched to an automatic fire alarm at the High School at 0055hrs on June 19, 2006. Dispatch reported that the alarm company indicated that numerous zones were being indicated. Chief Derienzo and Assistant Chief Strabone arrived shortly after dispatch and established command on the Park Avenue side of the structure and confirmed a multiple zone activation. Engine Crews were sent to investigate and discovered heavy smoke in the 1st floor hall on the Pascack Road side of the building.
The command post was then moved to the “D†side of the structure and equipment was positioned on Pascack Road. A second alarm assignment was requested which called the Hillsdale Fire Department for a RIT Team, Woodcliff Lake Fire Department for an engine, Montvale Fire Department for an engine, River Vale Fire Department for an Air Truck and the Tri-Boro Ambulance Corps .
Initial crews searched for the fire with the thermal camera and found the fire in room 24. Second in crews stretched a line into the building, established a water supply, prepared for horizontal ventilation, and laddered the building. After forcing entry to the room, the crews quickly extinguished the fire and began to check for extension. Mutual Aid crews began to perform ventilation, salvage, and relief of initial crews. Tri-Boro ambulance established a rehab area and Hillside FD was on the scene as a RIT.
The fire was confined to the front reception area in room 24 with smoke/heat damage to the offices in this area. The investigation revealed that the fire began in a hot/cold water cooler. All patterns indicated that this was the area of origin. The scene was turned over to Board of Education Employees.

The Fire Department was dispatched to a reported air conditioner fire in a residential structure at 2134hrs. Upon arrival Chief Derienzo confirmed that there was a fire in house.
The first engine made entry into the smoke filled structure and began vent and search. Crews determined that that there was smoldering fire in the couch and quickly extinguished the couch. The fire appeared to had started in the air conditioning unit that was mounted in the wall and ignited the couch on fire.
The truck crews began overhaul and removed the section of the wall immediately adjacent to the air conditioner. A second crew removed a small section of siding from the exterior of the home where the air conditioners exhaust was located. A third crew secured the utilities and check for extension in the attic.
A subsequent investigation revealed the air conditioning cord was the likely cause of the fire which then ignited the couch. The whole in the wall was patched by the fire department and the home was turned over to the residents.
